sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for
poisoning his children, a boy and a girl, after he
learnt that his wife was having affairs with
another man.
49-year-old Espina fed his 5-year-old son and 7-
year-old daughter with pizza laced with rat
poison because he was angry with his estranged
wife.
The little girl, named Mia, vomited after eating
the pizza. When her little brother, Steward,
soiled himself, Espina took him to the
bathroom.
He placed the boy in the bathtub and
submerged him in the water. He then called his
estranged wife and said that it was her fault.
The woman made a desperate call to Espina's
stepmother, who contacted police.
Officers broke the bathroom door and found
Espina in the bathtub cradling the lifeless,
naked body of his son.
The 5-year-old boy died from a combination of
rat poison and being submerged in the water.
The 7-year-old girl was found sleeping in her
own vomit on the couch.
